When it comes to cars and trucks, AutoTrader knows what they’re doing. It’s their business. So when they release their second annual list of “Must Test Drive” vehicles (which they have), it’s something to sit up and pay attention to. If you’re in the market to buy, or if you just want to see what the cars of the future are shaping up to look like, this list would be a good place to start.

As an improvement over the 2013 list, they have included an expanded selection by splitting the list into two lists, one for cars and one titled “trucks/vans/SUVs”, so you could look at it as two categories, or you could just think of it as the top 20 instead of the top 10.

According to’s research, as stated in their press release, the test drive is a highly influential part of a buyer’s decision making process. In their survey of car shoppers, 67% of the participants described the test drive as “extremely important” before buying a vehicle. Factors that contributed to the final choice included comfort, performance and styling, and the average car shopper test drove three vehicles before making a final choice.’s Must Test Drive Cars for 2014 include:

Cars, trucks, vans and SUVs that were selected by as “Must Test Drive” for 2014 had to be available for sale by October 2014, be available for sale in at least half of U.S. states, and have a base price, for the model reviewed, of under $75,000. Additionally, it had to be production run (or planned production run) of at least 10,000, so that the models chosen would be relevant to most car shoppers within the U.S. market.
